A fine example of Southern Song Dynasty calligraphy by Emperor Lizong, featuring a transcribed quatrain by the poet Meng Haoran on silk.
This work presents a fine example of Southern Song Dynasty calligraphy, attributed to Emperor Lizong. The piece is executed in ink on a circular silk fan format, a common medium for courtly artistic expression during the period. The characters are written in a fluid, semi-cursive script that balances structural rigour with personal expression.
The text transcribes a quatrain by the Tang Dynasty poet Meng Haoran. The poem evokes a quiet, contemplative atmosphere, describing a monk hanging his robes in a mountain temple and the sound of bells echoing at dusk. The calligraphy reflects the scholarly pursuits expected of an emperor, demonstrating a high level of technical proficiency and an appreciation for classical literature.
The composition is arranged in vertical columns, typical of traditional Chinese writing. The ink density varies across the strokes, showing the controlled pressure of the brush against the silk surface. Several red seals are visible along the margins, indicating the work's provenance and its status within the imperial collection. These seals provide a historical record of ownership and authentication, connecting the object to the broader context of Song Dynasty court life.
As a fan painting, the work was intended for both aesthetic enjoyment and practical use. The circular shape dictates the arrangement of the text, requiring the artist to adapt the length of the lines to the constraints of the silk. This piece offers a glimpse into the intersection of political power and artistic refinement in thirteenth-century China, where the ability to compose and write poetry was a necessary attribute of the ruling class.
