This work by Ishikawa Toyonobu, a prominent figure in the mid-eighteenth-century Ukiyo-e tradition, captures a theatrical scene involving puppeteers. The composition is divided into three distinct vertical panels, a format known as sanpukutsui, which allows for a narrative flow across the print. Each panel features a performer holding a small puppet aloft, set against sliding doors decorated with nature motifs, including cranes and water. The figures are rendered with the characteristic grace of the period, wearing patterned kimonos that demonstrate the artist's attention to textile detail.
Toyonobu was known for his contributions to the development of the benizuri-e technique, which involved the use of two or three colour blocks to supplement the traditional black ink. This print displays a refined use of line and a balanced distribution of space. The figures occupy the foreground, while the background panels provide a sense of interior depth without overwhelming the primary subjects. The inclusion of calligraphy within the composition integrates text and image, a common practice in Japanese printmaking that adds a layer of literary context to the visual performance.
As a practitioner of the Ukiyo-e school, Toyonobu focused on the transient nature of urban life and entertainment.
