A 1888 Post-Impressionist study by Vincent van Gogh, capturing the light and foliage of an Arles public park with rhythmic brushwork and a distinctive yellow sky.
Painted in Arles in 1888, this work captures a corner of the public park located near the artist's residence at the Yellow House. Vincent van Gogh referred to this series as 'The Poet's Garden', intending to evoke a sense of literary romanticism through the depiction of nature. The composition is dominated by a high-keyed, almost acidic yellow sky that contrasts with the dense, varied greens of the foliage below.
The application of paint is characteristic of the artist's period in the south of France. He employs short, rhythmic brushstrokes to define the textures of the grass, the drooping branches of the weeping willow, and the rounded forms of the shrubs. The foreground is scattered with small, light-coloured marks that suggest wildflowers or light filtering through the canopy. Unlike his earlier, more sombre work, this piece demonstrates his interest in colour theory and the emotional potential of light.
Van Gogh was influenced by Japanese woodblock prints during this time, which is visible in the flattened perspective and the decorative arrangement of the trees against the sky. The painting avoids traditional depth, instead prioritising the surface pattern created by the interplay of light and shadow. The weeping willow on the right acts as a vertical anchor, balancing the mass of the rounded bushes on the left. This print reproduces the specific impasto and colour relationships of the original canvas, allowing for a close examination of the artist's technique. It remains a clear example of his ability to transform a mundane urban park into a scene of personal, subjective expression.
