A refined Mannerist study in pen and ink by Bartolomeo Passarotti, depicting an allegorical figure of Prudentia with a mirror.
This drawing by the Bolognese master Bartolomeo Passarotti depicts an allegorical figure, traditionally identified as Prudentia. The woman sits upon a throne, holding a mirror that reflects the image of a small putto or winged figure standing before her. The composition relies on the characteristic Mannerist approach to form, where elongated proportions and fluid, rhythmic lines define the drapery and the physical presence of the subject.
Passarotti employs a sophisticated use of cross-hatching to build volume and shadow. The pen work is precise, creating a sense of weight in the fabric of the woman's robes while maintaining a light, sketch-like quality in the surrounding areas. The mirror acts as a central device, linking the two figures and reinforcing the iconographic theme of self-reflection or wisdom. The arched top of the sheet suggests this may have been a preparatory study for a larger decorative project, such as a fresco or a lunette painting, common in the ecclesiastical and civic commissions of the late sixteenth century.
As a draughtsman, Passarotti was known for his technical facility and his ability to capture anatomical structure through energetic line work. The interaction between the seated woman and the putto is balanced, creating a stable yet dynamic arrangement. The use of brown ink and wash provides a warm, unified tone across the paper, allowing the viewer to focus on the interplay of light and shadow across the folds of the clothing. This work offers a clear view into the working methods of a significant figure in the Bolognese school, demonstrating the transition from the high Renaissance style toward the more expressive, complex compositions that defined the later part of the century.
