A geometric abstraction by Marsden Hartley, created during his time in Provincetown, featuring a restrained palette and interlocking structural forms.
Marsden Hartley produced this work during a period of intense experimentation with abstraction. Following his time in Berlin, where he engaged with the German Expressionist circle, Hartley returned to the United States and spent time in Provincetown, Massachusetts. This painting reflects his synthesis of European avant-garde influences, particularly the geometric rigour of Cubism and the symbolic language of Synthetic Cubism.
The composition is constructed from a series of interlocking geometric planes. Hartley reduces the coastal environment of Provincetown to a series of simplified shapes, including trapezoids, rectangles, and a prominent circular form at the base. The palette is restrained, relying on muted earth tones, soft pinks, and stark contrasts of black and white. The application of paint is deliberate, with visible brushwork that provides a tactile quality to the surface of the canvas.
Rather than attempting a direct representation of the physical harbour or town, Hartley focuses on the structural essence of the scene. The circular element at the bottom, punctuated by rhythmic black and white segments, suggests a buoy or a nautical motif, yet it remains firmly within the realm of non-objective design. The work demonstrates Hartley's ability to balance formal discipline with a personal, subjective response to his surroundings. It is a clear example of his transition from the highly decorative, military-inspired motifs of his Berlin period toward a more austere, American-centred modernism. The painting invites the viewer to consider the relationship between geometric order and the observed world, stripped of unnecessary detail.
