This etching and engraving by Pieter Bast, dated 1599, represents the western portion of a larger, multi-sheet panoramic view of Amsterdam as seen from the IJ. Bast, a Dutch cartographer and engraver, provides a detailed account of the city during a period of rapid maritime expansion. The composition is divided into two distinct zones: the bustling harbour filled with merchant vessels and the foreground, which is populated by figures in exotic attire, including individuals with a camel and various goods, suggesting the global reach of Dutch trade at the turn of the seventeenth century.
The upper section features an elaborate cartouche containing a Latin dedication to the city magistrates, flanked by allegorical figures. The sky is populated by flying putti holding heraldic shields, a common motif in cartographic prints of the era. Bast employs a precise, calligraphic line quality to define the rigging of the ships and the architectural silhouettes of the city in the distance. The foreground figures, rendered with a degree of stylistic exaggeration typical of Northern Mannerism, provide a sense of scale and narrative interest against the backdrop of the busy port.
