Robert Delaunay, a central figure in the development of early twentieth-century abstraction, produced this work during his transition into Orphism. This movement, a term coined by the poet Guillaume Apollinaire, describes the lyrical use of colour and light to create rhythm and structure without relying on traditional perspective. In this composition, the act of pouring is secondary to the exploration of chromatic interaction.
The scene depicts a domestic interior, yet the objects are fragmented into circular motifs and overlapping planes.
