A refined Mughal miniature portrait of Emperor Muhammad Shah, depicted in profile with a falcon, rendered in opaque watercolour and gold.
This exquisite miniature painting depicts the Mughal emperor Muhammad Shah, who reigned from 1719 to 1748. Created by the artist Muhammad Rizavi Hindi, the work follows the established conventions of mid-eighteenth-century Mughal court portraiture. The emperor is shown in profile, a standard pose that emphasises the regal features and dignified bearing expected of a sovereign. He is dressed in a vibrant green jama, adorned with strings of pearls and precious gemstones, which reflect the immense wealth and aesthetic refinement of the Mughal court.
Central to the composition is the falcon perched upon the emperor's gloved hand. Falconry was a favoured pastime among the Mughal elite, serving as a symbol of nobility, patience, and martial prowess. The bird is rendered with careful attention to its plumage and alert posture. Behind the emperor, a golden halo radiates against a dark background, a visual device used to denote divine authority and the exalted status of the ruler. The lower border of the painting features a delicate floral pattern, a common decorative element in manuscripts and albums of this period.
The technique employed is typical of the period, utilising opaque watercolour and gold leaf to achieve a luminous, jewel-like quality. The artist demonstrates a high level of precision in the rendering of the jewellery, the texture of the textiles, and the subtle shading of the emperor's face.
