Boris Kustodiev created this lithographic poster in 1917, a period of immense political upheaval in Russia. The work was commissioned to encourage public financial support for the Provisional Government through the Freedom Loan. It depicts a central figure, a soldier wearing a traditional papakha hat and a long greatcoat, standing firmly upon a wooden platform. He holds a rifle horizontally across his body, creating a stable, horizontal axis that contrasts with the verticality of his stance.

Behind the soldier, red banners wave, inscribed with revolutionary slogans. Below him, a crowd of people looks upward, their hands raised in support. The composition uses a low viewpoint to grant the soldier a heroic, monumental quality. Kustodiev, known primarily for his genre paintings of Russian provincial life, adapted his style here to the requirements of agitprop art. The palette is dominated by deep browns, blacks, and the stark red of the banners, which serves to draw the eye toward the text and the central figure. The lettering at the top, in a bold, Cyrillic typeface, announces the purpose of the loan. This piece provides a clear example of how visual media functioned during the transition between the February and October Revolutions, utilising established artistic techniques to mobilise public sentiment.
