A refined 1822 etching by Andrew Geddes, depicting the historical figure Nikolaas Rockox with masterful tonal control and classical portraiture techniques.
This etching by the Scottish artist Andrew Geddes depicts Nikolaas Rockox, a prominent figure in seventeenth-century Antwerp. Geddes, known for his technical proficiency in printmaking, produced this work in 1822. The composition draws inspiration from the tradition of Dutch and Flemish portraiture, specifically the style associated with Anthony van Dyck.
The subject is captured in profile, facing right, with his gaze directed away from the viewer. He wears a traditional ruff collar, which provides a stark contrast against the dark, atmospheric background. Geddes employs fine, controlled lines to define the facial features, beard, and the texture of the clothing. The use of light and shadow creates a sense of volume and presence, typical of the artist's approach to graphic portraiture.
Andrew Geddes was a collector of old master prints, and his own work often reflects a deep engagement with the techniques of his predecessors. This particular etching demonstrates his ability to translate the tonal qualities of oil painting into the medium of print. The plate shows a mastery of cross-hatching and stippling to achieve a range of greys and deep blacks. The print is presented on a clean, cream-coloured paper, allowing the dark ink to command attention. It is a study in character and historical homage, reflecting the artist's interest in the cultural history of the Low Countries. The work remains a fine example of nineteenth-century British printmaking, demonstrating a clear technical lineage from the masters of the Baroque period.
