A formal eighteenth-century engraving by Johann Christian Ernst Müller, depicting the aristocrat Nicolaus Christoph von Lynker in a classic oval portrait format.
This engraving by Johann Christian Ernst Müller depicts Nicolaus Christoph von Lynker, a figure of the German aristocracy. The portrait follows the conventions of eighteenth-century European printmaking, utilising a formal oval frame set against a rectangular background of fine, horizontal hatching. This technique provides a subtle contrast that draws the viewer's eye toward the subject.
Lynker is shown in a three-quarter view, wearing a voluminous periwig, which was a standard marker of status and professional standing during this period. His attire includes a cravat with detailed lace work, rendered with precision through the engraver's burin. The facial features are modelled with careful attention to light and shadow, capturing a sense of gravity and composure. Below the oval portrait, a cartouche contains the subject's name and title, inscribed in a flowing, elegant script that complements the formal nature of the print.
Müller, a German engraver, was active during a period when portrait prints were essential for documenting the appearance of public figures and members of the nobility. Such works were often produced for inclusion in biographical collections or as private commissions for families. The clarity of the lines and the balanced composition reflect the technical rigour expected of professional printmakers at the time. The print demonstrates a high level of control, particularly in the rendering of the wig's curls and the texture of the fabric. This piece offers a glimpse into the visual culture of the era, where the portrait served as a primary method for preserving the likeness of individuals for posterity. The work is preserved in the collection of the Rijksmuseum, reflecting its historical value as a record of the period's social hierarchy and artistic output.
