This engraving depicts Leopold I, Holy Roman Emperor, presented within a formal oval frame. The composition follows the conventions of seventeenth-century royal portraiture, where the subject is surrounded by military attributes to signify authority and martial power. Leopold I is shown in armour, his gaze directed towards the viewer, framed by a laurel wreath that symbolises victory. Above the portrait, the imperial crown rests between two eagles, reinforcing his status as the sovereign of the Holy Roman Empire.
The surrounding space is filled with weaponry, including cannons, cannonballs, and banners, which serve to contextualise the emperor as a defender of his realm. The artist employs precise line work to define the textures of the metal armour, the soft curls of the periwig, and the decorative elements of the frame. The lower section of the print features a Latin inscription, 'LEOPOLDO AVGVSTISSIMO IMPERATOR DE ROMANI', which identifies the sitter and provides a formal dedication characteristic of the period.
Giovanni Battista Hacque, an engraver active during the latter half of the seventeenth century, demonstrates a high degree of technical control in this work.
