A detailed seventeenth-century engraving of the Dutch physician Hadrianus Junius, captured in profile with scholarly attire.
This engraving by Cornelis Koning depicts the Dutch physician, historian, and humanist Hadrianus Junius. The subject is presented in profile, facing right, within an oval frame that includes Latin inscriptions. Junius wears a cap and a heavy fur-trimmed garment, typical of the academic and professional attire of the sixteenth-century intellectual elite. The precision of the line work captures the texture of the fur and the subtle contours of the face, demonstrating the technical proficiency required for copperplate engraving during this period.
The composition follows the conventions of humanist portraiture, where the sitter is identified not only by their likeness but also by the inclusion of heraldic elements and scholarly attributes. The Latin text surrounding the oval and the additional verses at the base provide context regarding the subject's identity and his standing within the academic community. The inclusion of a horn emblem at the bottom serves as a visual reference to his name, a common practice in Renaissance portraiture to reinforce the identity of the sitter through symbolic puns or visual metaphors.
Cornelis Koning, active in the mid-seventeenth century, produced this work as a record of a figure who had passed away shortly before the print's creation. The engraving reflects the sober, analytical approach to portraiture that was common in the Netherlands, where the focus remained on the clarity of form and the accurate representation of the individual. The use of cross-hatching and varied line weights creates a sense of volume and depth, despite the inherent flatness of the print medium. This piece offers a clear view into the visual culture of the Dutch Golden Age, where the dissemination of portraits of scholars and public figures was a standard method for documenting intellectual history.
