A refined nineteenth-century graphite and chalk portrait of George Gillis Haanen by the Dutch artist Willem van der Worp.
This portrait by Willem van der Worp depicts George Gillis Haanen, a member of a well-known family of Dutch painters. Executed in graphite and chalk, the work demonstrates the technical precision common to mid-nineteenth-century portraiture. Van der Worp employs a delicate application of media to define the sitter's features, focusing on the subtle transitions of light across the face and the texture of the period clothing.
The composition follows a traditional bust-length format, with the sitter turned slightly to the side while engaging the viewer with a direct gaze. The artist uses soft, diagonal hatching in the background to create a sense of depth without distracting from the subject. The attention to detail in the rendering of the cravat and the lapels of the coat provides a clear indication of the fashion of the era. The signature of the artist is visible in the lower right corner, executed with a fluid hand that complements the overall refinement of the drawing.
Van der Worp was active in the Netherlands during a period when portraiture remained a primary method for documenting the professional and social classes. This drawing captures the composed, formal demeanour expected of a gentleman of the time. The monochromatic palette allows the viewer to focus on the characterisation of the subject, relying on line and shadow rather than colour to convey presence. As a study of a fellow artist, the work reflects the professional networks within the Dutch art community of the nineteenth century. The preservation of the paper surface and the clarity of the marks provide an authentic look at the draughtsmanship of the period, making it a suitable addition for those interested in historical portrait studies.
