This woodcut by Veit Rudolf Specklin depicts the humanist scholar Desiderius Erasmus of Rotterdam. The composition draws heavily from the visual language of the Northern Renaissance, presenting the subject within an elaborate architectural frame. Erasmus is shown in three-quarter profile, wearing his characteristic scholar's cap and fur-lined robe. His hand rests upon a bust inscribed with the word 'Terminus', a reference to his personal seal and motto, which symbolised the inevitability of death.

The surrounding structure is dense with classical motifs. Flanking the central figure are two herms, while the upper arch features decorative swags of fruit and foliage. A cartouche at the base contains a Latin inscription, which serves to identify the sitter and provide a scholarly context for the image. The precision of the line work reflects the technical skill required for woodblock cutting during the sixteenth century, where the artist had to carve away the negative space to leave the image in relief.

Specklin, a woodcutter and draughtsman from Strasbourg, produced this work as a tribute to the intellectual stature of Erasmus. The inclusion of the Latin text reinforces the connection between the visual arts and the literary culture of the period. The work is a clear example of the graphic tradition that circulated the likenesses of prominent thinkers across Europe.
