A formal eighteenth-century portrait engraving of Christoph Dionysius, Freiherr von Seeger, surrounded by allegorical symbols of his rank and intellectual life.
This formal portrait, executed in the late eighteenth century, depicts Christoph Dionysius, Freiherr von Seeger. The work follows the conventions of aristocratic portraiture, presenting the subject within an oval frame, a common device in period engraving to focus attention on the sitter. Schlotterbeck employs precise line work to capture the textures of the subject's military uniform, including the medals and decorative elements that denote his rank and status as an aide-de-camp to the Duke of Württemberg.
The composition is framed by allegorical elements typical of the era. Two putti are positioned around the central oval: one holds a flaming torch, while the other unfurls a scroll. Below the portrait, a collection of objects rests upon a ledge, including a globe, a lyre, and a mask. These items function as attributes of the sitter, suggesting his intellectual pursuits, his involvement in the arts, and his administrative duties at the Académie Caroline in Stuttgart. The inclusion of these symbolic objects elevates the portrait beyond a mere likeness, framing the subject as a man of culture and civic responsibility.
Technically, the print demonstrates the high level of skill required for copperplate engraving during this period. The artist uses varying densities of cross-hatching to create depth and shadow, particularly within the folds of the drapery and the contours of the face. The text inscribed at the base provides the sitter's full titles and affiliations, maintaining the formal nature of the piece. This print serves as a record of the visual language used to commemorate figures of authority in the late eighteenth-century German courts, where the combination of portraiture and symbolic iconography was standard practice for official documentation.
