A formal 1703 engraving by Simon Thomassin depicting Christian Schröder, the Mayor of Gdańsk, presented in a classical oval frame with heraldic detail.
This engraving by Simon Thomassin depicts Christian Schröder, a figure of civic authority in Gdańsk. The composition follows the conventions of early eighteenth-century portraiture, presenting the subject within a formal oval frame that rests upon a stone plinth. The plinth features a coat of arms and a Latin inscription detailing the subject's role as Praeconsul Gedanensis, or Mayor of Gdańsk, alongside his birth and death dates.
Thomassin employs a precise burin technique to define the textures of the subject's attire and the surrounding drapery. The sitter is shown in a three-quarter view, wearing a dark robe with a white clerical-style collar. His hand is placed against his chest, a gesture common in portraiture of the period to convey gravity and composure. The background consists of a draped curtain and a suggestion of a column, elements that provide a sense of architectural space and status. The oval frame is rendered with fine hatching, creating a subtle transition of light that draws the eye toward the subject's face.
As a French engraver who spent significant time in Rome, Thomassin brought a refined technical approach to his portrait commissions. This work demonstrates the clarity and discipline characteristic of the period, where the engraver's primary objective was the accurate representation of the sitter's likeness and social standing. The print serves as a record of an individual's public identity, captured through the medium of copperplate engraving. The monochromatic palette and the controlled use of line work allow for a focus on the subject's features and the heraldic details at the base of the composition. This piece is a representative example of the portrait prints produced for documentation and commemorative purposes during the early 1700s.
