A refined Kamakura-period portrait of the monk Xuanzang and an attendant, rendered in ink and colour on silk.
This hanging scroll depicts the celebrated Chinese monk Xuanzang, known in Japan as Genjō, who travelled to India to retrieve Buddhist scriptures. The composition presents the monk in a standing posture, wearing traditional robes with a kasaya draped over his shoulder. He holds a sutra case, a reference to his role in translating sacred texts. Beside him stands a smaller figure with distinct green skin, often identified as a supernatural attendant or a representation of a foreign guide from the monk's journey.
The work belongs to the Kamakura period, a time when Buddhist portraiture became increasingly refined. The artist, Kasuga Motomitsu, employs a controlled line quality to define the figures against a dark, atmospheric background. The use of colour is restrained, focusing on the earthy tones of the monk's garments and the subtle contrast of the attendant's skin. The silk support has aged, contributing to the muted palette that characterises the piece.
Such portraits were often used in religious contexts to honour the lineage of monks or to serve as objects of veneration. The depiction of Xuanzang reflects the historical interest in the transmission of Buddhism from India to China and subsequently to Japan. The figure of the attendant adds a narrative element, suggesting the arduous nature of the journey across Central Asia. The composition is balanced, with the verticality of the monk providing a sense of stability, while the attendant introduces a secondary point of interest. This print captures the quiet, meditative quality of the original silk painting, preserving the historical character of the Kamakura-era aesthetic.
