A sixteenth-century portrait of the explorer Vasco da Gama, attributed to the Portuguese court painter Gregorio Lopes.
This portrait depicts Vasco da Gama, the Portuguese explorer who established the maritime route from Europe to India. Attributed to the court painter Gregorio Lopes, the work captures the subject in his later years. The composition focuses on the head and shoulders, presenting a direct, unadorned view of the explorer. His features are rendered with precision, showing the texture of his grey, flowing beard and the weathered skin of his face. He wears a dark, simple cap and a heavy, fur-lined garment, which reflects the fashion of the Portuguese nobility during the early sixteenth century.
Gregorio Lopes was a central figure in Portuguese painting during the reign of King Manuel I and King John III. His style often combined local traditions with influences from Northern European art, particularly the Flemish school. This is evident in the careful attention to physical detail and the controlled application of paint. The background is a muted, solid tone, which ensures that the viewer's attention remains fixed on the subject's expression. The lighting is soft, creating subtle shadows that define the contours of the face and the volume of the beard.
This image provides a historical record of one of the most influential figures of the Age of Discovery. The painting avoids excessive ornamentation, opting instead for a sober representation that aligns with the gravity of the explorer's career. As a piece of sixteenth-century portraiture, it offers insight into the visual culture of the Portuguese court. The work is currently held in the collection of the Sociedade de Geografia de Lisboa. This fine art print reproduces the original panel painting, maintaining the tonal balance and the character of the brushwork found in the sixteenth-century original.
