A refined seventeenth-century portrait study in chalk on blue paper by the Dutch master Abraham van den Tempel.
This drawing by Abraham van den Tempel captures a gentleman in a moment of quiet composure. Executed in black and white chalk on blue paper, the work demonstrates the artist's technical command over light and shadow. The subject stands in a three-quarter view, his left hand resting against his chest while his right hand holds a small letter or document. This gesture, common in seventeenth-century portraiture, suggests a narrative of correspondence or professional status.
Van den Tempel was a prominent portraitist in the Netherlands during the mid-seventeenth century. His training under his father, Lambert Jacobsz, and later under Joris van Schooten, informed his approach to the human form. This sketch reflects the stylistic conventions of the period, where the sitter is presented with a sense of dignity and restraint. The use of blue paper provides a mid-tone ground, allowing the artist to build volume through the application of white chalk highlights and dark charcoal shadows. The background remains loosely defined, focusing the viewer's attention on the sitter's facial features and the texture of his clothing.
As a study, the drawing reveals the artist's process of capturing the sitter's likeness before finalising a composition for a painting. The lines are deliberate, showing a balance between anatomical accuracy and the fluid nature of chalk as a medium. The sitter wears the typical attire of a Dutch burgher, including a plain collar and a heavy cloak, which were markers of social standing in the urban centres of the Dutch Republic. This piece offers a glimpse into the working methods of a painter who was highly sought after by the wealthy merchant class of Amsterdam and Leiden. It remains a clear example of the draughtsmanship that defined the era.
