A fine mezzotint portrait of the painter Sir Peter Lely by Isaac Beckett, capturing the tonal depth and technical skill of seventeenth-century British printmaking.
This mezzotint by Isaac Beckett depicts the painter Sir Peter Lely, a figure of considerable influence in the seventeenth-century British art world. Beckett was one of the earliest English practitioners of the mezzotint technique, a method that allowed for subtle gradations of tone and a soft, painterly quality that differed from the harsh lines of traditional engraving. The print captures Lely with a direct gaze, his long, flowing hair rendered with the characteristic depth and shadow that defined the medium during this period.
Lely, born Pieter van der Faes, served as the Principal Painter to King Charles II. His own work defined the aesthetic of the Restoration court, and this portrait serves as a record of his appearance. Beckett’s execution demonstrates the technical precision required to manipulate the copper plate, using a rocker to create a burr that holds ink in varying densities. The result is a tonal range that mimics the softness of oil paint, particularly in the treatment of the subject's features and the dark, enveloping background.
The inscription at the base, 'Petrus Lellij Eques Pictor Caroli 2di', identifies the subject and his status as a knight and royal painter. This print reflects the collaborative nature of the print trade in London at the time, where artists and engravers worked to circulate images of prominent figures. The work remains a fine example of the mezzotint process, which became a staple of British printmaking for over a century. By focusing on the interplay of light and shadow, Beckett provides a study of character that remains legible and clear, free from the excessive ornamentation found in other contemporary graphic works. It is a piece that documents both the subject and the technical capabilities of the engraver.
