A striking portrait by Gustav Klimt, featuring Rose von Rosthorn-Friedmann against a bold blue background, showcasing the artist's transition toward the Vienna Secession style.
Painted between 1900 and 1901, this portrait depicts Rose von Rosthorn-Friedmann, a member of the Viennese social elite. Gustav Klimt captures his subject in a three-quarter view, her gaze directed away from the viewer. The composition is defined by a stark contrast between the figure and the background. The sitter wears a dark, shimmering gown that absorbs light, set against a bold, saturated blue backdrop that occupies the left side of the frame. A deep red, textured area sits at the base, grounding the figure.
Klimt employs a specific approach to the treatment of the subject's skin and attire. The face is rendered with a degree of naturalism, while the clothing and the surrounding space lean into a more decorative, painterly application of pigment. The inclusion of a pearl choker and gold bracelets adds a tactile quality to the work, reflecting the fashion of the period. The brushwork is varied, moving from smooth transitions on the skin to more gestural, almost impressionistic marks in the background and the fabric of the dress.
This work belongs to a period where Klimt was moving away from the traditional academic portraiture of the late nineteenth century. He began to experiment with flattened pictorial space and the integration of decorative elements, which would later become more pronounced in his Golden Phase. The portrait is a study in colour theory and light, as the deep blues and blacks interact with the warm tones of the skin. It remains a clear example of the stylistic shifts occurring within the Vienna Secession at the turn of the century, where the focus shifted towards the psychological presence of the sitter and the expressive potential of the painted surface.
