A detailed Baroque mezzotint portrait of Philipp Jacob Scheurl, a Nuremberg city councillor, captured with the tonal depth characteristic of the medium.
This mezzotint by Christoph Weigel depicts Philipp Jacob Scheurl, a prominent figure in Nuremberg during the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries. The portrait follows the conventions of aristocratic representation common to the Baroque period. Scheurl is shown in a three-quarter view, wearing a voluminous periwig and a formal collar, which signifies his status as a member of the city council and a primary treasurer. The sitter is framed within an oval cartouche, a device that adds a sense of architectural weight to the composition. Below the portrait, a coat of arms is integrated into the plinth, accompanied by a Latin inscription detailing his name, titles, and dates of birth and death.
Weigel, a skilled engraver and publisher based in Nuremberg, utilised the mezzotint technique to achieve the soft, tonal transitions visible in the sitter's face and the heavy drapery of the curtain. Unlike line engraving, which relies on hatching to create shadow, mezzotint allows for a continuous range of light and dark, providing a velvety texture to the background and the subject's clothing. The contrast between the illuminated face and the darker surroundings directs the viewer's attention to the sitter's expression. The inclusion of the painter's name, J.L. Hirschmann, indicates that Weigel based this print on an earlier oil painting. This collaborative process was standard for the dissemination of portraits of public officials during this era, allowing for the wider circulation of images that affirmed the authority of the subject. The work remains a clear example of the technical precision and formal portraiture traditions prevalent in German printmaking at the turn of the eighteenth century.
