A striking pencil and ink portrait of the Parisian art dealer Julien Tanguy, rendered with the expressive, rhythmic line work characteristic of Van Gogh's Paris period.
This drawing depicts Julien Tanguy, a Parisian paint grinder and art dealer who provided supplies to many artists in the late 19th century. Van Gogh frequented his shop in Montmartre, where Tanguy displayed works by artists who were then struggling to find a market. This specific study captures the sitter with a direct, frontal gaze, wearing his characteristic wide-brimmed hat.
The execution relies on rhythmic, hatched lines that define the contours of the face and the texture of the clothing. Van Gogh uses varying pressure to create shadow and depth, particularly around the eyes and the folds of the coat. The background features a series of vertical and diagonal marks, suggesting the interior of a studio or shop environment, perhaps hinting at the canvases Tanguy kept in his collection.
Unlike the later, more famous oil portraits of Tanguy which feature Japanese woodblock prints in the background, this drawing focuses on the physical presence of the man himself. The lines are deliberate and energetic, reflecting the artist's approach to drawing during his time in Paris. It offers a glimpse into the personal relationships Van Gogh formed within the artistic community of the city. The work is a study of character, rendered with the economy of line that defines his graphic output from this period.
