A detailed 19th-century engraving of the French playwright Molière by German artist Adrian Schleich.
This engraving by Adrian Schleich depicts the French playwright Jean Baptiste Poquelin, known as Molière. The work originates from the mid-19th century, a period when encyclopaedic publications frequently commissioned high-quality portraiture to accompany biographical entries. Schleich, a German engraver, employs a precise technique to capture the likeness of the dramatist, who lived during the 17th century.
The composition follows traditional portrait conventions. Molière is shown in a three-quarter view, his gaze directed away from the viewer. His long, curled hair and period-appropriate attire are rendered with careful attention to texture and light. The background consists of a fine cross-hatched pattern, which provides a neutral field that draws focus to the subject's facial features. The artist uses varying densities of line to create depth and volume, particularly in the folds of the clothing and the shadows beneath the chin.
At the top of the plate, the inscription 'Encyklopedya Powszechna' indicates its source, while the bottom margin includes the artist's signature and the subject's name in both Cyrillic and Latin script. This print reflects the technical standards of 19th-century reproductive engraving, where the goal was to provide a clear, accurate visual record of historical figures for a broad audience. The clarity of the lines and the balance of the tonal values demonstrate the skill required for such commercial print projects. It remains a representative example of how historical figures were visualised and disseminated through the print medium during the Victorian era.
