A rare ink drawing by the Pahari master Manak, featuring a dual-register composition of Ganesha and a courtly scene of Manya Sahib Man Rup Sagarji.
This ink drawing by the artist Manak, active in the Guler and Kangra regions of India during the late eighteenth century, offers a view into the preparatory methods of Pahari miniature painting. The composition is divided into two distinct registers, a common practice in workshop sketches intended for later refinement or as a record of a specific commission.
The upper register features a depiction of the deity Ganesha, seated with an elephant, rendered in clean, confident lines. The lower register presents a courtly scene: Manya Sahib Man Rup Sagarji is shown seated, holding a hookah, attended by figures who serve him. The drawing displays the characteristic stylistic traits of the Guler school, including the precise, rhythmic line work and the expressive, almond-shaped eyes of the human figures. The artist uses a minimal palette, relying entirely on the contrast between the dark ink and the aged, fibrous paper to define form and volume.
Such drawings were often kept in artist workshops as models for more elaborate, coloured paintings. They provide a clear look at the initial stages of the creative process, where the focus remains on the clarity of the outline and the balance of the figures within the space. The lack of colour allows the viewer to appreciate the draftsmanship and the economy of line that defined the work of master painters like Manak. This piece is a study of both religious iconography and secular court life, capturing the social hierarchy and the spiritual devotion present in the Pahari courts of the period. The paper shows signs of age, including a horizontal fold, which is typical for works that were stored in portfolios for generations.
