Jacques-Louis David painted this portrait of Juliette Récamier in 1800. It depicts the famous Parisian socialite reclining on a daybed, a piece of furniture designed in the Directoire style. The composition is notable for its austerity. David chose a dark, muted background, which forces the viewer to focus entirely on the subject and the elegant lines of the furniture.

Madame Récamier wears a simple, white, high-waisted gown, reflecting the fashion of the period that drew inspiration from ancient Greek and Roman attire. Her pose, with her body turned towards the viewer and her head tilted, conveys a sense of relaxed composure. The inclusion of the tall, slender lamp stand to the left provides a vertical balance to the horizontal orientation of the daybed.

David left the painting unfinished, as Madame Récamier reportedly grew impatient with the slow progress of the work and commissioned another artist to complete a portrait. Despite this, the painting remains a primary example of French Neoclassical portraiture. The artist prioritised clarity of form and a restrained palette over decorative excess. The work is currently held in the collection of the Musée du Louvre in Paris. It demonstrates David's ability to capture the essence of his subject through precise draughtsmanship and a controlled use of light. The painting avoids the theatricality often associated with earlier portraiture, opting instead for a quiet, measured representation of the sitter.
