A 1913 Cubo-Futurist portrait by Kazimir Malevich, depicting composer Mikhail Matyushin through a complex arrangement of geometric forms and fragmented planes.
Painted in 1913, this work depicts the composer and theorist Mikhail Matyushin. Malevich employs the visual language of Cubo-Futurism, a style that synthesises the fragmented planes of Cubism with the kinetic energy and dynamism associated with Futurism. The composition avoids traditional representation, opting instead for a structural arrangement of geometric forms that suggest the presence of the sitter through abstraction.
The canvas is organised into a series of interlocking rectangles, arcs, and sharp angles. A horizontal band of small, white squares cuts across the centre, acting as a rhythmic element that disrupts the verticality of the surrounding shapes. The palette consists of earthy ochres, deep reds, and blacks, punctuated by cooler tones of blue and white. These colours are applied in flat, opaque layers, emphasising the two-dimensional surface of the canvas.
Malevich was closely associated with Matyushin, particularly through their collaboration on the opera Victory over the Sun. This portrait reflects the intellectual climate of the Russian avant-garde during the early twentieth century, where artists sought to break away from academic traditions. By deconstructing the human figure into a series of non-representational signs, Malevich explores the relationship between form, colour, and space. The work does not aim to capture a physical likeness, but rather to convey the essence of the subject through a rigorous, analytical approach to painting. The resulting image is a complex arrangement of shapes that invites the viewer to engage with the mechanics of visual perception.
