A formal copperplate engraving from the early eighteenth century, depicting the Tübingen bookseller Johann Georg Cotta in a classical oval frame.
This copperplate engraving by Andreas Matthäus Wolfgang depicts Johann Georg Cotta (1663-1712), a bookseller and academic citizen of Tübingen. The portrait follows the conventions of early eighteenth-century German printmaking, presenting the subject within an oval frame set against a classical architectural backdrop. Cotta is shown in a three-quarter view, wearing a voluminous periwig and a cravat, attire typical of the professional class of the period. The engraving demonstrates the technical precision of Wolfgang, who was active in Augsburg during this era.
The composition is structured with a formal border containing Latin inscriptions that detail the subject's identity and dates of birth and death. Below the oval frame, a small coat of arms is positioned above a pedestal. This pedestal bears a German verse, which serves as a memorial tribute to Cotta, written by Andreas Adam Hochstetter. The text reflects the esteem in which Cotta was held within the academic community of Tübingen, noting his contributions to the world of books.
Wolfgang employs fine cross-hatching and varied line weights to render the texture of the subject's clothing and the soft curls of the periwig. The shading within the oval frame creates a sense of depth, drawing the viewer's attention to the facial features of the sitter. This work is a representative example of the commemorative portraiture produced for academic and civic figures in the Holy Roman Empire. It functions as both a record of an individual and a display of the engraver's skill in handling formal portrait conventions. The print remains a useful document for historians interested in the social and intellectual circles of eighteenth-century German university towns.
