A classic High Renaissance portrait of Joanna of Aragon, attributed to Raphael and his workshop, featuring the subject in a formal red gown.
This portrait depicts Joanna of Aragon, a noblewoman of the Italian Renaissance. Raphael, working with his studio assistants, produced this work during the final years of his career in Rome. The composition follows the established conventions of courtly portraiture, presenting the subject in a seated position with a calm, composed expression. Her attire consists of a deep red gown with voluminous sleeves, reflecting the fashion of the period. The head is adorned with a matching cap, which frames her features.
Behind the figure, the background includes a glimpse of an architectural setting, which provides a sense of depth to the scene. The lighting is managed to draw attention to the face and hands of the sitter, while the darker tones of the clothing and the surrounding space create a sense of volume. Raphael was known for his ability to balance naturalism with an idealised sense of grace, a quality present in the soft modelling of the subject's skin and the gentle posture of her hands.
Historical records indicate that the painting was commissioned by Cardinal Bibbiena as a gift for Francis I of France. It arrived in the French royal collection, where it remained for centuries. The work is now housed in the Louvre Museum in Paris. The painting is often discussed in the context of Raphael's late style, where the contributions of his workshop assistants, such as Giulio Romano, are frequently identified in the execution of the drapery and the background elements. The portrait remains a clear example of the formal portraiture style that defined the High Renaissance period in Italy.
