A 1679 portrait engraving by Jan Luyken depicting the Dutch theologian Jacobus Koelman in a formal, scholarly setting.
This portrait depicts Jacobus Koelman (1632-1695), a prominent Dutch Reformed minister and theologian known for his adherence to the Nadere Reformatie movement. The work is an etching and engraving by the Dutch artist Jan Luyken, dated 1679. The inscription at the top right, 'ÆTATIS XLVII', indicates the subject was forty-seven years old at the time of the portrait's creation.
Koelman is shown in a half-length pose, positioned behind a desk with an open book. His attire is typical of the seventeenth-century Dutch clergy: a dark, buttoned cassock with a plain white collar. His right hand is raised in a gesture of discourse, while his left rests near the open pages of the volume, suggesting his role as a scholar and preacher. The background features a simple architectural column, a common device in portraiture of the period to provide a sense of gravity and formal setting.
Jan Luyken was a prolific engraver and poet, active in Amsterdam. His technical skill is evident in the precise cross-hatching used to model the folds of the fabric and the subtle shading of the face. The lower margin contains a Latin title identifying Koelman as a Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy, followed by a Dutch verse praising his ministry in Sluis. The print serves as a historical record of a figure who exerted influence within the religious debates of the late seventeenth-century Netherlands. The composition is balanced and restrained, reflecting the sober aesthetic preferred by the Reformed community of the era.
