A delicate seventeenth-century portrait miniature of Henriette Marie of the Palatinate, rendered in watercolour on vellum by Alexander Cooper.
This portrait miniature depicts Henriette Marie of the Palatinate (1626-1651), the daughter of Frederick V, Elector Palatine, and Elizabeth Stuart. Alexander Cooper, a practitioner of the delicate art of limning, captures the sitter with the refined precision characteristic of seventeenth-century miniature painting. The work is executed in watercolour on vellum, a medium that allowed for the subtle layering of pigment to achieve a lifelike translucency in the skin tones.
The sitter is presented in a three-quarter view, her gaze directed slightly away from the viewer. Her hair is styled in the fashionable ringlets of the mid-seventeenth century, adorned with pearls. She wears a simple, elegant necklace of pearls, which complements the pale tones of her complexion and the soft, neutral background. The artist employs a restrained palette, focusing on the luminosity of the face and the texture of the hair. The original setting, a gold filigree frame, adds a decorative element that contrasts with the quiet intimacy of the portrait itself.
Alexander Cooper, brother to the more widely known Samuel Cooper, spent much of his career working in European courts, including those in the Netherlands and Sweden. His style is marked by a clear, linear quality and a focus on the individual features of the subject. This miniature provides a glimpse into the private portraiture of the period, where such small-scale works were often kept as personal tokens or family mementos. The focus remains entirely on the subject, avoiding elaborate costume details to ensure the personality of the sitter is the primary subject of the viewer's attention. The work remains a fine example of the technical skill required to produce portraiture at this scale during the Baroque era.
