A fine mezzotint portrait of Henrietta Maria Yarborough by Isaac Beckett, after a painting by Sir Godfrey Kneller, capturing the refined style of the late seventeenth century.
This mezzotint by Isaac Beckett depicts Henrietta Maria Yarborough, based on an original painting by Sir Godfrey Kneller. Beckett was a significant figure in the development of the mezzotint process in England, a technique that allowed for subtle gradations of tone and soft transitions between light and shadow. This print demonstrates the technical precision required to translate the painterly qualities of Kneller's work into a monochromatic medium.
The subject is shown in a seated pose, accompanied by a small greyhound resting on her lap. Her attire, featuring loose sleeves and a draped bodice, reflects the fashion of the late seventeenth century. The composition includes a heavy curtain backdrop and a glimpse of a garden setting to the right, elements common in aristocratic portraiture of the period. The soft lighting across her face and the texture of the fabric illustrate the capabilities of the mezzotint rocker and scraper tools used by the engraver.
Isaac Beckett was instrumental in popularising this printmaking method in London, often collaborating with prominent painters of the era. The inscription at the base of the print identifies the sitter and provides attribution to both the painter, Kneller, and the engraver, Beckett. The work is a fine example of the commercial print market in the late Stuart period, where high-quality reproductions of portraits allowed for the wider circulation of images of the gentry and nobility. The print captures the refined aesthetic of the time, focusing on the sitter's poise and the tactile qualities of her clothing. It remains a clear record of the collaborative relationship between painters and printmakers during the late seventeenth century.
