A delicate seventeenth-century portrait study of Gesina ter Borch, rendered in black and white chalk on blue paper by Moses ter Borch.
This intimate portrait study depicts Gesina ter Borch, the sister of the artist Moses ter Borch. Executed in black and white chalk on blue paper, the work demonstrates the technical proficiency common among the talented ter Borch family, who were active in the Dutch Republic during the seventeenth century. The use of blue paper provides a mid-tone ground, allowing the artist to build form through the application of dark chalk for shadows and white chalk for highlights. This technique, known as 'aux deux crayons', creates a sense of volume and soft texture, particularly in the rendering of Gesina's hair and the subtle contours of her face.
Moses ter Borch, though his career was cut short by his early death, produced a significant body of drawings that capture his family members with directness and sensitivity. The profile view is a classic choice for portraiture of the period, focusing the viewer's attention on the sitter's features and expression. The light source, coming from the upper left, models the cheekbone and nose, while the loose, sketch-like quality of the hair suggests a quick, observational approach. The drawing remains a personal document of the artist's domestic life, reflecting the artistic culture of the Dutch Golden Age where drawing was a fundamental practice for both professional training and private recording of one's surroundings.
This museum-grade fine art print captures the tactile quality of the original chalk marks against the textured blue paper. It is a quiet, contemplative piece that fits well in spaces where a sense of history and classical technique is desired. The monochromatic palette ensures it remains versatile for various interior styles, maintaining the integrity of the original seventeenth-century study.
