A 1916 portrait by Gustav Klimt featuring Friederike Maria Beer set against a backdrop of decorative, East Asian-inspired figures.
Painted in 1916, this portrait depicts Friederike Maria Beer, a member of a prominent Viennese family. The composition is notable for its flattened perspective and the integration of the subject into a dense, decorative background. Klimt draws heavy inspiration from East Asian art, specifically Chinese woodblock prints, which are visible in the surrounding figures. These figures, dressed in traditional attire, create a busy, almost chaotic environment that contrasts with the calm, frontal pose of the sitter.
Friederike wears a fur-trimmed coat, which she reportedly turned inside out to reveal the patterned lining for the artist. This choice allows Klimt to display his mastery of surface decoration and textile-like motifs. The coat features swirling, organic shapes that echo the patterns found in the background, blurring the distinction between the figure and her surroundings. The colour palette is varied, incorporating muted earth tones alongside brighter accents of red, yellow, and blue.
Klimt avoids traditional modelling of the figure, opting instead for a graphic approach that flattens the image plane. The face of the sitter is rendered with more naturalism than the rest of the canvas, providing a point of focus amidst the ornamental chaos. This work represents a late phase in the artist's career, where his interest in non-Western aesthetics and decorative surface design reached a high level of complexity. The painting remains a significant example of the Vienna Secession style, demonstrating the movement's departure from academic realism toward a more subjective, symbolic mode of representation. The work is currently held in the collection of the Tel Aviv Museum of Art.
