A delicate seventeenth-century portrait miniature of Elizabeth of the Palatinate, rendered in watercolour on vellum by Alexander Cooper.
This exquisite portrait miniature depicts Elizabeth of the Palatinate, the daughter of Frederick V, Elector Palatine and King of Bohemia. Painted by Alexander Cooper, a practitioner of the miniature form who spent much of his career working for the Swedish and Danish courts, the work captures the sitter with the refined sensibility characteristic of seventeenth-century court portraiture.
Cooper employs a delicate application of watercolour on vellum, a medium that demands precision and patience. The sitter is presented in a three-quarter view, her gaze directed towards the viewer with a composed expression. Her dark, ringleted hair is styled in the fashion of the period, adorned with subtle decorative elements. The artist uses a soft, muted palette to render the pale tones of her skin, which contrast with the darker, shadowed curls and the blue fabric of her garment.
The miniature is housed within its original gold filigree frame, a common presentation for such personal items during the Baroque era. These objects were often intended for private viewing or as diplomatic gifts, reflecting the social status and political connections of the sitter. Cooper, the brother of the more widely known Samuel Cooper, demonstrates a high level of technical skill in the handling of light and shadow, particularly in the subtle modelling of the face and the rendering of the jewellery.
This piece offers a glimpse into the aesthetic preferences of the mid-seventeenth-century European aristocracy. The focus remains on the individual, with the artist stripping away extraneous detail to concentrate on the likeness and character of the subject. The work is a fine example of the miniature tradition, where the small scale of the object invites an intimate engagement between the viewer and the portrait.
