Portrait of Duli Xingyi - Kita Genki

This portrait depicts the Chinese monk Duli Xingyi, a figure associated with the Obaku school of Zen Buddhism in Japan. Kita Genki, an artist active during the late seventeenth century, specialised in these formalised depictions of Zen masters. The subject sits in a meditative posture upon a woven mat, his hands tucked within the sleeves of his dark, layered robes. He holds a ruyi sceptre, a traditional symbol of authority and spiritual insight within the monastic tradition.

The composition follows the conventions of chinso, a genre of portraiture intended to capture the likeness of a master for their disciples. The figure is rendered with a focus on individualised facial features, showing the signs of age and experience. The artist employs a restrained palette, allowing the subtle textures of the fabric and the precise lines of the face to command attention.
