A refined stipple engraving from 1813 depicting Domenico Artaria, a notable figure in the European art and music publishing trade.
This stipple engraving depicts Domenico Artaria, a member of the prominent Artaria family of music publishers and art dealers. The work, executed in 1813, captures the subject in a seated pose, resting his hand upon a book. The composition follows the conventions of early nineteenth-century portraiture, focusing on the sitter's formal attire and composed expression. The artist employs the stipple technique, which uses small dots to create subtle gradations of tone and texture, resulting in a soft, painterly effect that defines the contours of the face and the folds of the heavy coat.
The print includes a detailed inscription beneath the image, providing biographical information about Domenico Artaria, including his birth in Blevio on Lake Como in 1763 and his death in Mannheim in 1823. Such inscriptions were common in portrait prints of the era, serving to document the identity and status of the individual for posterity. The background is kept simple and dark, ensuring that the viewer's attention remains fixed on the figure. The lighting is directed from the upper left, casting gentle shadows that provide volume to the form of the sitter.
Ludwig Gottlieb Portman, the engraver, was active in Vienna during this period and worked on various portrait commissions. This print reflects the technical precision associated with the Viennese school of engraving at the time. The work is a fine example of how portraiture functioned as a medium for recording the likenesses of influential figures within the European cultural and commercial spheres. The print is preserved in the collection of the Rijksmuseum, demonstrating its historical value as a record of the Artaria family's presence in the European art market.
