A sixteenth-century portrait of scholar Barthélemy Aneau, captured in the precise, small-scale style characteristic of Corneille de Lyon.
This portrait depicts Barthélemy Aneau, a scholar and head of the Collège de la Trinité in Lyon. Attributed to Corneille de Lyon, a Dutch painter who settled in France, the work exemplifies the small-scale portraiture for which the artist gained recognition during the sixteenth century. Corneille de Lyon operated a successful workshop in Lyon, producing numerous likenesses of the French court and local intelligentsia.
The subject is presented in a bust-length format, a signature approach for the artist. The composition focuses on the sitter's facial features, rendered with precise brushwork. Aneau is shown with a full, dark beard and a direct gaze, conveying a sense of intellectual gravity. He wears a doublet with decorative slashes, a common fashion element of the period, which provides subtle texture against the plain background. The artist employs a characteristic green backdrop, a choice that isolates the figure and directs attention to the psychological presence of the sitter.
Technically, the painting demonstrates the artist's ability to capture individual character within a compact frame. The application of oil paint on wood panel allows for fine detail, particularly in the rendering of the eyes and the texture of the beard. The lighting is even, avoiding dramatic shadows to maintain a clear, objective representation of the subject. This work remains a representative example of the portrait style favoured by the French elite during the mid-sixteenth century, prioritising clarity and individual likeness over elaborate allegorical settings. The preservation of the panel reveals the fine craquelure typical of works from this era, adding to the historical character of the piece.
