The subject is depicted in a three-quarter view, holding a document or ledger, which led to the traditional title, The Auctioneer. The figure wears a dark cap and a heavy, fur-trimmed garment, rendered with the loose, expressive brushwork typical of the artist during the late 1650s.
The composition relies on a restricted palette of earth tones, browns, and ochres. Rembrandt uses chiaroscuro to pull the subject from the dark, indistinct background. The light source, positioned to the upper left, illuminates the man's face and the paper he holds, while the rest of his form recedes into the surrounding gloom.
