This portrait, executed in 1883, depicts a scholar-official during the late Qing Dynasty. The subject is rendered with a focus on realism, capturing the individual features of the face through subtle shading and fine brushwork. The figure wears a traditional fur-lined winter robe, which provides a textural contrast to the smooth, pale skin of the face. In his hand, he holds a ruyi sceptre, a symbol of authority and good fortune, which adds a layer of symbolic meaning to the composition.
The upper portion of the work is occupied by extensive calligraphy, a common feature in traditional Chinese portraiture. This text provides biographical details about the sitter, documenting his career, academic achievements, and personal history.
