A refined seventeenth-century Dutch engraving depicting a man at a writing desk, complete with scholarly attributes.
This engraving presents a formal portrait of a man, rendered within a circular frame that sits atop a rectangular plinth. The subject is depicted in a three-quarter view, wearing the characteristic attire of the mid-seventeenth-century Dutch burgher class, including a plain white collar and a dark doublet. His expression is composed, reflecting the sober dignity often associated with the professional and merchant classes of the period.
The composition employs a classic trompe-l'oeil effect. Below the portrait, the plinth features a small still-life arrangement consisting of a stack of bound books, a quill, and an inkwell. These objects serve as attributes of the sitter, suggesting his occupation as a scholar, clerk, or administrator. The use of cross-hatching and fine line work creates a sense of volume and texture, particularly in the rendering of the fabric and the rounded form of the portrait frame.
Johannes Heinsius, active during the Dutch Golden Age, utilised the medium of engraving to produce works that were often intended for inclusion in books or as independent prints for collectors. The technical precision required for such a work demonstrates the high standards of printmaking in the Netherlands during this era. The background of the print is filled with a dense grid pattern, which pushes the portrait forward and provides a neutral, structured environment that does not distract from the sitter. This print is a representative example of seventeenth-century portraiture, where the inclusion of symbolic objects provided context regarding the social standing and intellectual pursuits of the individual portrayed.
