Dmitry Levitzky was a pre-eminent portraitist of the Russian Enlightenment, celebrated for his technical precision and his ability to capture the psychological depth of his subjects. This portrait depicts his daughter, A. D. Levitzkaya, dressed in traditional Russian attire, which was a departure from the prevailing European fashions favoured by the aristocracy of the time. The subject wears a kokoshnik, a traditional headpiece, paired with a silk sarafan, demonstrating the artist's interest in national identity during a period of intense Westernisation in the Russian Empire.
The composition is balanced and calm. The subject stands near a window, her posture relaxed as she adjusts her headpiece.
