A seventeenth-century Dutch portrait of a young boy holding a kolf club, dressed in a distinctive chevron-patterned outfit.
This portrait by Wybrand de Geest (I) depicts a young boy dressed in a striking yellow and black chevron-patterned garment. The subject holds a kolf club in his right hand and a ball in his left, referencing the popular seventeenth-century Dutch game of kolf, a precursor to modern golf. The boy wears a large, starched white ruff collar and matching cuffs, which contrast with the bold geometric pattern of his attire. His expression is direct, and his posture is formal, typical of the aristocratic portraiture commissioned during the Dutch Golden Age to document the status and upbringing of children in wealthy families.
De Geest, a painter from Leeuwarden, spent time in Italy, where he absorbed the influence of Caravaggism. This background is evident in the dramatic lighting and the dark, moody background that pushes the figure forward. The composition is balanced, with the boy positioned centrally against a muted backdrop. The floor features a simple chequered pattern, which provides a sense of spatial depth without distracting from the subject. The attention to the texture of the fabric and the fine lace details demonstrates the technical skill required of portraitists in this period. The painting captures a moment of leisure, yet the rigid pose and formal clothing remind the viewer of the social expectations placed upon children of the Dutch elite. This work remains a clear example of the period's interest in combining realistic portraiture with symbolic objects that denote the social standing and recreational habits of the sitter.
