Gustave Loiseau, a painter associated with the later generation of Impressionists, produced this work in 1909. The scene captures the harbour at Dieppe, a location frequently visited by artists of the period due to its specific light and maritime atmosphere. Loiseau employs a technique characterised by short, rhythmic brushstrokes, often referred to as 'en treillis' or cross-hatching, which creates a textured surface across the canvas.
The composition focuses on the interplay between the architectural forms of the town and the expansive, light-filled foreground. The buildings, rendered in muted tones, provide a stable backdrop to the movement of figures traversing the quay. Loiseau avoids the sharp outlines favoured by his contemporaries, preferring instead to build form through the accumulation of colour dabs. This approach allows the light to appear as if it is vibrating across the surface of the painting, particularly in the treatment of the sky and the reflective ground.
Unlike the earlier Impressionists who sought to capture the fleeting moment, Loiseau often returned to the same subjects under different weather conditions or times of day. This repetition allowed him to refine his observation of light. In this particular view of Dieppe, the artist balances the solid geometry of the harbour structures with the soft, atmospheric quality of the northern French coast. The palette remains restrained, relying on subtle shifts in blue, grey, and ochre to define the space. The result is a quiet, observational study of a working port, devoid of romanticised embellishment, focusing instead on the physical reality of the environment as perceived by the artist.
