A somber depiction of French soldiers resting at the Gare de l'Est in Paris during the First World War, painted by Maximilien Luce in 1917.
Maximilien Luce, a painter associated with the Neo-Impressionist movement, produced this work during the First World War. The scene depicts French soldiers, known as poilus, resting at the Gare de l'Est in Paris. The station served as a transit point for troops moving toward the front lines. Luce captures the exhaustion of the men, who are shown slumped in sleep or sitting in quiet contemplation amidst the transit environment.
The composition focuses on the physical toll of the conflict. One soldier sits in the foreground with his head bowed, while another lies asleep beside him. The background figures remain indistinct, suggesting the constant movement and anonymity of the station. Luce uses a palette of muted blues, greys, and earthy tones to convey the somber atmosphere of the period. His brushwork remains visible, reflecting his earlier training in Divisionist techniques, though applied here with a more expressive, sombre intent.
Unlike his earlier works that often depicted the industrial life of Paris or the working class with a sense of optimism, this painting addresses the reality of wartime fatigue. The lighting is artificial and dim, typical of a station interior at night, which adds to the sense of isolation experienced by the soldiers. The work provides a record of the human experience during the Great War, focusing on the quiet moments of respite rather than the spectacle of combat. It remains a document of the social conditions in France during 1917, capturing the weariness of those caught in the machinery of war.
