This work by the Zen monk Motsurin Jōtō, also known as Bokusai, represents the tradition of ink painting that flourished during the Muromachi period in Japan. The composition centres on a circular moon, rendered in subtle ink washes, which provides a backdrop for the gnarled, reaching branches of a plum tree. The plum blossom holds a specific place in East Asian art, often associated with resilience and the arrival of spring, as the flowers appear while snow remains on the ground.
The artist employs a calligraphic approach to the branches, using varying pressure to suggest the texture of aged bark and the delicacy of new buds. The ink application is restrained, relying on the contrast between the pale, circular void of the moon and the darker, more concentrated ink of the tree. This use of negative space is a hallmark of the period, encouraging the viewer to contemplate the relationship between the subject and the surrounding emptiness.
