A classic ink wash painting of a plum branch by the Yangzhou eccentric Jin Nong, featuring expressive brushwork and traditional composition.
This ink wash painting by Jin Nong depicts a flowering plum branch, a subject of great significance in Chinese literati painting. As a member of the Eight Eccentrics of Yangzhou, Jin Nong developed a distinct style that departed from the rigid academic standards of his time. His approach to the plum blossom is characterised by a deliberate, almost calligraphic application of ink, where the strength of the brushwork defines the structure of the gnarled branches.
The composition balances the heavy, dark ink of the main trunk against the lighter, more delicate washes used for the blossoms. The branches extend across the frame, creating a sense of movement and natural growth. Jin Nong often utilised a dry brush technique, which adds texture to the bark and contrasts with the softer, rounded forms of the petals. The inclusion of calligraphic inscriptions and red seals is typical of the period, integrating the text into the visual balance of the work.
Jin Nong was known for his unconventional personality and his rejection of traditional painting hierarchies. His work often reflects a personal, expressive quality rather than a pursuit of technical perfection. In this piece, the focus remains on the essential form of the plum tree, capturing its resilience and beauty through minimal means. The use of negative space allows the viewer to focus on the interplay between the ink tones and the paper surface. This print captures the subtle variations in ink density, from the deep blacks of the primary branch to the faint grey washes of the distant flowers, preserving the original aesthetic of the brushwork.
