A refined ink-on-paper hanging scroll by Zhang Feng, depicting a scholar observing a chrysanthemum, accompanied by elegant calligraphy.
This hanging scroll by Zhang Feng, a scholar-painter active during the transition between the Ming and Qing dynasties, captures a moment of quiet contemplation. The composition follows the traditional format of Chinese literati painting, where the visual subject is balanced by a significant area of calligraphy. The figure, dressed in simple robes, stands in a relaxed posture, holding a chrysanthemum flower to his nose. His expression is one of calm observation, reflecting the scholarly ideal of withdrawal from public life into the pursuit of nature and poetry.
Zhang Feng employs a calligraphic line quality, using fluid, controlled ink strokes to define the folds of the garments and the delicate structure of the chrysanthemum plant. The rock and foliage are rendered with minimal detail, allowing the negative space of the paper to suggest the atmosphere of a cool, misty autumn day. The ink wash is applied with restraint, maintaining a monochromatic palette that emphasises the texture of the paper and the rhythmic quality of the brushwork.
The upper portion of the scroll features a poem written in cursive script, which provides context for the scene. The text links the act of gathering flowers to the broader themes of reclusion and the appreciation of seasonal change. The presence of red seal impressions adds a formal element to the work, indicating its history and the artist's identity. This piece represents the refined aesthetic of the period, where the integration of poetry, calligraphy, and painting served as a medium for personal expression among the educated elite. The work remains a clear example of the minimalist approach favoured by artists who sought to convey internal states through the economy of ink and brush.
