A detailed seventeenth-century topographical etching by Matthäus Merian (I), documenting the fortified town of Frankenthal with a numbered legend.
This etching by Matthäus Merian (I) depicts the fortified town of Frankenthal, Germany, as it appeared during the mid-seventeenth century. Merian, a prolific engraver and publisher based in Frankfurt, produced this work for his extensive topographical series, Topographia Germaniae. The print captures the town from a bird's-eye perspective, a common technique in early modern cartography to convey both the layout of the streets and the defensive capabilities of the fortifications.
The town is enclosed by a star-shaped defensive perimeter, typical of the bastion fort system prevalent in the period. The geometric precision of the ramparts, moats, and bastions is rendered with clear, thin lines, allowing for the inclusion of a detailed legend. This key identifies specific structures, including churches, gates, and individual bulwarks, which are numbered directly on the map. The surrounding countryside is sketched with minimal detail, providing context for the town's position within the wider region.
Two coats of arms are positioned at the top of the composition, adding a formal, heraldic element to the technical drawing. The use of hatching and cross-hatching creates subtle variations in tone, defining the density of the urban grid against the open fields. As a historical document, the print offers a precise record of urban planning and military architecture in the Palatinate region. It reflects the meticulous approach Merian brought to his documentation of European cities, combining artistic skill with the requirements of geographical accuracy. The work remains a valuable resource for historians studying the development of fortified towns in the seventeenth century, providing a clear view of the structural priorities of the era.
